Guide to Payment Applications in Construction

Construction pay applications are the documents exchanged between contractors during payment. Generally speaking, general contractors collect pay applications monthly from the subcontractors on a job. Then, the general contractor combines the pay applications and creates a master pay app to send to the property owner. This process is complicated and time consuming for general contractors, subcontractors, and owners.

There are lots of different pay application forms. Some companies use custom forms, other companies rely on standard form templates published by groups like the AIA, ConsensusDocs, Levelset, or others.

This video provides a general introduction to pay applications in construction and the issues that arise when trying to send, receive, collect, or submit pay applications during a project.
