Goodyear Tire Recall Affects Thousands

In February, 2012, Goodyear Tire & Rubber announced ( see Reuters article) that it was voluntarily recalling six (6) versions of its Wrangler Silent Armor tires due to the risk of tread separation. This recall is expected to affect approximately 41,000 tires that Goodyear made in 2009. According to the Notice of Recall, Goodyear first learned of a potential problem involving these tires in May, 2010. There may have been at least one fatal rollover accident prior to the recall of the Silent Armor tires in which a defective tire played a role. It is unclear now as to whether there were other reports of injuries associated with this defective product or whether the recall will trigger an investigation of past accidents.

Tread separation is a phenomena whereby the tread of a tire will peel off or separate from the rest of the tire, usually causing a complete disintegration of the tire. This is obviously a potentially deadly occurrence that can cause a vehicle to leave the road and/or rollover. This dangerous condition was at the center of the Bridgestone/Firestone recall of Ford Explorer tires in May, 2000. Subsequent liability lawsuits against Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone alleged that the companies knew about the dangerous propensity for tread separation on Ford Explorers and the subsequent risk of rollover, but that the two companies did nothing with this information for many years before the recall. These allegations were supported by testimony in Senate Committee hearings. It has been estimated that 250 deaths resulted from these defects.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID number for the current Goodyear recall is 12 T003000.
