Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program which allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs aThe Global Entry program is particularly useful for frequent travelers who are flying into the United States on a regular basis; however there is no minimum number of trips necessary to qualify for the program. Participants may enter the United States by using automated kiosks located at selected airports. Germans and other eligible nationals may use the Global Entry without being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. In order to apply for Global Entry, German citizens must first preregister with the German Federal Police at an EasyPASS enrollment center in Germany. The EasyPASS System has just recently been implemented, with first EasyPASS egates being installed at Germany's busiest airports in the course of year 2014. It will replace the existing trusted traveler system - ABG (Automatisierte Biometriegestutzte Grenzkontrolle). EasyPASS registration requires inter alia an electronic passport (ePass) with a radio frequency chip or a new generation identity card in cheque card format. After a German citizen clears for Global Entry with the German Federal Police, the German Federal Police will notify CBP that the applicant is eligible to apply for Global Entry. The applicant can then apply for Global Entry through the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES). Germans residing in the United States with permanent resident status can apply directly through the GOES without registering first through the EasyPASS system. Registering for EasyPASS is free of charge but there is a $100 non-refundable fee for Global Entry applications. Participation in Global Entry does not discharge foreigners from filling out the "Electronic Travel Authorization System" (ESTA)-Form or applying for a visa.
Global Entry is open to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, German, Dutch, South Korean and Mexican nationals. Canadian citizens and residents may enjoy Global Entry benefits through membership in the NEXUS program. Applicants under the age of 18 must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian. Applicants may not qualify for participation in the Global Entry program if they: Provide false or incomplete information on the application; have been convicted of any criminal offense or have pending criminal charges or outstanding warrants; have been found in violation of any customs, immigration or agriculture regulations or laws in any country; are subjects of an ongoing investigation by any federal, state or local law enforcement agency; are inadmissible to the United States under immigration regulation, including applicants with approved waivers of inadmissibility or parole documentation; or cannot satisfy CBP of their low-risk status (e.g. CBP has intelligence which indicates that the applicant is not low risk but CBP cannot determine an applicant's criminal, residence or employment history).
Application Process, Global Entry Enrollment Centers and Kiosk Locations
Applications through the GEOS are submitted online at the following website https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/main/goes. Once the application is reviewed, a message is sent to the applicant's GOES account instructing the applicant to schedule an interview at one of the Global Entry Enrollment Centers. The interview will determine the applicant's eligibility. At the interview, a U.S. Customs Border Protection officer will ask the applicant questions, take a photo, and collect biometric information, e.g. scan fingerprints. Designated kiosks are available at the locations listed under http://www.globalentry.gov/loactions.html.
Travelling with Global Entry
Upon arrival at U.S. airports, program participants proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingertips on the scanner for fingerprint verification, and make a customs declaration. The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to the baggage claim and the exit. Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and interview before enrollment.
