Today, an increasing number of people rely on global positioning system (GPS) units for directions, rather than maps. Unfortunately, with greater dependence on technology come risks. When the information used for GPS directions is incorrect or outdated, car accidents and injuries can occur.

How Defective GPS Units Cause Accidents and Injuries

GPS units work by providing digital mapping data via satellite, and, in some cases, using an automated voice to tell drivers which way to travel. But what if the data isn’t accurate? If the mapping information is outdated or incorrect, the disembodied voice could very well direct drivers to turn the wrong way onto a one-way street or to travel down a road that leads off of a cliff.

In the state ofWashington, there have been a number of incidents caused by a defective GPS device; according to the state’s Department of Transportation, approximately 623 collisions were caused by an electronic device such as a computer or GPS over a four-year span. Sadly, two of these accidents were fatal.

In 2011, three women who were visiting metro Seattle from out of town were directed to take a wrong turn by their defective GPS and ended up in a creek, according to the Seattle Times. Although their vehicle sank, the women were unharmed; however, not all GPS-related accidents have a happy ending.

A Virginia driver was traveling at night when her GPS directed her to make a left at an intersection; however, the unit failed to warn her that she needed to cross the median before turning, which meant she was going the wrong way down the road, according to WSET-TV in Virginia. Within in few minutes, the driver was involved in a head-on car accident that killed another motorist.

InOregon, a couple was stranded in snow for three days after their defective GPS directed them to travel down a remote road, according to Fortunately, they had enough supplies to survive until their cell phone had a strong enough signal to contact authorities.
