Dealing with Code Enforcement in California.
What to do when you get a code enforcement notice (as opposed to a citation).Don't ignore the notice. Note the time frames to correct the conditions. Call the code enforcement officer that sent the notice to discuss the issue. Start working on correcting the situation as soon as possible. Ask for an extension as soon as possible. If you need legal help, seek it as soon as possible. If you need political help, contact your representatives as soon as possible.
What to do if you are cited: administrative citation or administrative civil penalties.Again, start correcting the problems as soon as possible. Contact the code officer as soon as possible to make sure you understand the citation. Note the time on the notice to appeal the citation. Read the Municipal Code that is cited. If you are going to appeal, do it quickly and follow the process found in the Municipal Code. If you lose the appeal, you can typically appeal to Superior Court.
What to do if you are criminally cited for a code enforcement issue. Most agencies want compliance. Comply as soon as possible. Ask the court or the prosecuting attorney for time to correct and to dismiss once compliance is achieved. If you are not guilty, ask for a trial as soon as possible.
