Custody Evaluation Tip #4: Deciding How Much to Explain

Posted by attorney Orion Nessly

Don't: Give your child more information than he or she can emotionally handle.

Do: Explain the process in a simple, honest, and straighforward way so that your child knows what to expect when they meet the evaluator. When the evaluator comes to your home (or you bring your child to their office), your child needs to know who this stranger is that is going to be talking to them alone in their bedroom or an unfamiliar office. Your job is to make sure that this is not a surprise to your child and that they are comfortable talking to the evaluator alone.
