How to put your best foot forward at court.
Prior To Your Court DateYou need to hire a lawyer if you are charged with a crime. Too many folks stroll into court without a lawyer and get burned and sit in court all day long. A lawyer is your ticket to significantly increasing your chances at a favorable result. You can't put a value on having the piece of mind that an experienced lawyer is on your side.
Day Of CourtThe two biggest things to do right are dress appropriately and be early! If you are a male wear a suit or at a minimum a collared shirt and dress pants. If you are a female wear a professional outfit and avoid flip flops. Second, be early. Courts generally start at 9am which means that there will be traffic, limited parking, and long security lines for those planning on getting to the courthouse at 9am. Missing a morning docket call can land you in jail. Third, silence your phone. Fourth, stand up when the judge calls your name at docket call. Fifth, use the restroom prior to docket call (it's important to be present in the courtroom unless your lawyer instructs you otherwise). Sixth, only talk in open court if asked a question by your lawyer or the judge. Finally, whatever the end result don't lose your cool publicly with the judge, an opponent, or your lawyer.
