Could Traumatic Brain Injuries in Men Be More Severe?
Researchers are trying to look at the differences between men and women who had sustained a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). The overall rate of TBI is higher in men than women, but millions of women are also injured annually, making TBI a health priority for both men and women.
Outcomes of TBIs: Men vs. WomenIn the study "Gender differences in self-reported long-term outcomes following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury," it is revealed that significantly more men reported difficulty with setting realistic goals while women reported more headaches, dizziness, and loss of confidence. Sometimes men have a tough time even accepting injury, which can have a devastating consequence on their relationships following TBI. In this study, the men were found to report functional symptoms like sensitivity to noise and sleep disturbances as significantly more problematic than women. Whereas for women, lack of initiative and needing supervision were substantially more problematic in daily functioning.
Female and male mice recover from TBI differentlyA study released by researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center (GMUC) examined how sex alters the timing of inflammation in the brain after TBI. The researchers at GMUC reported that male mice tend to have greater brain distress in the week following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) than their female counterparts. This included a marked escalation in inflammation and nerve cell death.
The alarming results: up to a week after a TBI injury, responses between male and female subjects were markedly different. Female mice have more protection against brain trauma in the first week after TBI, and if that is true in humans, it provides a much larger period to treat female patients following TBI.
TBI is a Lifelong ConditionIndividual differences and individual responses to brain injury are much more the norm for lawyers who practice in this area. While the growing body of literature examining gender and other differences in outcome post-TBI helps treatment modalities in a population, if you need to find a lawyer, therapist or other professional for someone you know who is suffering from the consequences of a TBI, look for experience in handling TBI cases.
