Choosing the Best Attorney in the Age of Technology
With forms of advertising markedly different from a generation ago, how does today's litigant pick the best attorney for their case?
Word of Mouth; Today and ForeverAs it was twenty, forty or even longer yeas ago, personal recommendation is the best way to find the lawyer needed for your case. Even in our world of transparent technology the best attorney is found by asking a colleague, friend, family member, or acquaintance for a lawyer recommendation. Why, ...the person you ask most likely is someone who has a core value system and belief system that's similar to you. Thus, their positive experience is likely to translate well. Plus, the chances are the recommendation will be local and easy to reach and you will get individualized, immediate attention base upon the referral .
What if you cant get a personal recommendation?Years ago, first stop advertisement shopping brought you to the "YELLOW PAGES" Anyone remember them?
If you can still get you hands on some, they are a GREAT source. WHY? Any attorney who still invests dollars in them is doing pretty darn well financially and has one nice practice with much success. That's because the Yellow Pages is now considered to be the last place attorneys place their advertising dollars.
Beyond that, here is the order of resources:
1. Local Bar Associations. Attorneys compete to be listed with such associations for particular types of cases and the criteria for acceptance is pretty strict.
2. Internet Searches to Attorney Centric Listings. Sites like AVVO are perfect because you can find an individual attorney with client testimonials and list of individualized accomplishments
3. Internet Searches to Firm Centric Listings. These includes sites that portray a law firm and its specialties. They lack attorney specific highlighting unless you go and explore their individual website.
4. TV and Radio: these mass markets efforts to attract clients are highly successful but may land you in a tanks with so many other fish you will don't get much attention. That's not to suggest to stay away but be smart. You want your case handled with care and your relationship to be open.
