The statutory period is a look back period for ten years. This is both a discretionary and statutory requirement. So even if specific conduct does not constitute inelgibility for good moral character, the Immigration Judge can decide that as a matter of discretion. The 10 year period is calculated backwards from the date of filing.
How to Prove Good Moral Character
The best way of showing that you are a good person is to show the court that you have filed all your taxes, have no criminal record, coached soccer, been a participating member of your church, show that you donate to non-profit organziations, etc etc. You want to develop a paper record to show that you have been a model citizen under such dire circumstances.
