Questions to ask when hiring a divorce lawyer to ensure the lawyer has the best experience and local knowledge: (1) How often does the lawyer practice in family court; (2) In which family courts does the lawyer most frequently appear, (3) Does the lawyer focus more on custody and parenting time matters or is the lawyer more experienced in accounting and asset division; (4) Does the lawyer's practice include guardian ad litem investigations; (4) Does the lawyer have specialized knowledge or experience in domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health issues; (6) Does the lawyer have specialized training or experience in specific legal issues such as alimony, removal or same sex marriage?
Personality and Approach
Questions to ask when hiring a divorce lawyer to ensure their personality and approach will be a good fit: (1) Does the lawyer have a collaborative approach; (2) Does the lawyer communicate frequently; (3) how does the lawyer prefer to communicate; (4) Does the lawyer have associates or assistants who help him/her to communicate with clients; (5) Does the lawyer have training or experience in conciliation, mediation, or negotiation; (6) Do you feel comfortable talking to the lawyer about sensitive issues?
