Baby Was Born With The Cord Around The Neck?

Entertainer Jordan Sparks recently gave birth. The 28 year old former American Idol winner explained her birthing experience.

Her birthing plan included a midwife at a birthing center. This birthing center happened to be across the street from a major hospital.

Her husband began to deliver the baby but he noticed that the baby’s umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice. Her husband stated that it resembled a scarf around someone’s neck.

The midwife stepped in and the baby was successfully delivered without further need for emergency intervention.

When a baby is born with the cord around the neck this medical condition is called nuchal cord. In some instances, like Jordan Sparks’ situation, the baby can be delivered with no harm. However, this is not always the case. For children who have to deal with nuchal cord during delivery, one of the most serious threats to the child is umbilical cord compression.

Since the umbilical cord is responsible for providing life sustaining nutrients to the baby, compression of the umbilical cord can cut off these nutrients. Doctors and nurses can sometimes tell that the umbilical cord is compressed because of the readings of the electronic fetal heart monitor. The readings can reveal a sudden drop in the baby’s heart rate.

If the baby is no longer tolerating the vaginal delivery doctors must take actions to help the baby, namely an emergency C-Section, if warranted. The C-Section may be needed because if the other intrauterine resuscitation measures do not work, the baby can suffer a brain injury due to a lack of blood an oxygen.

Was your baby born with the cord around the neck and now you have been told that the baby has a brain injury? Maybe the doctors have mentioned hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) to you, or have told you that your baby is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. To speak with me further about the challenges that your child will face in the future this is what I invite you to do.
