My daughter will be 19 this Dec. Her dad and I were divorced when she was about 1 1/2 year old. We were married in tn, but divorced in Ms. Our daughter was born in Ms, but we have lived in tn up until 3 years ago,(currently in Ms). I received foodstamps and medical insurance from tn up until 3 years ago. I was awarded full custody. My ex wasnt ordered to pay any set amount of child support. He has only given me no more than $100.00 in the past 17 years. He draws some kind of ssi or disability check, but the social security office told me that our daughter could not draw a check off of him. I feel like he has excused himself from all his parental responsibilities and that its ok, but its not ok. I need legal advice.
As for social security, you daughter would now have to qualify on her own for benefits as she has aged out of being able to draw off her father. As for the child support issue,, I cannot advise you to do anything but contact a domestic attorney or your local DHS office and see if you have any rights at this time.
