Will I get points on my license if I just pay a ticket for careless driving in Denville NJ?
He told me he gave me a ticket for careless driving instead of speeding.
This is my first time getting this type of ticket.

You need to wait 30 days to negotiate with the prosecutor since the cop can write the speeding for 30 days. But my guess is the cop realized that and wrote the careless to allow you to negotiate to a 0 pointer. If it was speeding over 14 mph that would not be the case. So you can try to negotiate but they may offer 4-97.2 which is 0 points but $439. If you can negotiate to a less expensive 0 pointer it would be worth it. But not worth an attorney since the fee would negate any savings. Or you can ask you insurance company whether they would remove the 2 insurance points (different than MVC 2 points since they stay on for three years) if you took an approved safe driving course. If they will, pay the ticket (the least expensive- the Judge can charge more in court and no court costs) eat the points, take the course and the insurance and MVC points are gone.
Had you received a ticket for speeding 40 miles over the limit in Denville we know one thing for sure: your license would be suspended at least 20 days and the Judge would really want to send you to jail. You got a HUGE break-but if you want to go in there and try to do better---go ahead. I suggest you do not do this until at least 30 days have passed since the incident since one of the prosecutor's there would say--ok, no problem-I will ask the officer to write you the 5 point speeding ticket and we will see you back in court another day.
Yes it is a 2-point ticket but since you got a such a big break on the speed you may want to consider paying it so that the officer doesn't see you contesting it and then later write a 5-point speeding ticket. If you do want a contest it I suggest hiring a lawyer to navigate this case with feather like care.
