The employer is trying to break this up over two days. 5A-11:59pm, the 12A-12:30p. Although there is some double time in those hours, its not the same if it was 30 hours consecutive. Also since they are trying to do this, they are not accounting for 8 hour rest period between the two days.
There is no premium added for working consecutive hours. If your employer's workday ends at 11:59 then overtime stops accruing for that workday, and starts accruing for the next workday. Overtime is never calculated by the number of hours in a single shift.
If you work more than 12 hours in a workday, you start accruing double-time pay. If you work more than 8 but less than 12 hours in a workday, you are entitled to time-and-a-half pay.
