I was caught shoplifting at Walmart in AZ. The amount stolen equalled ~$12. Security took my information, ID, and picture. Was told i would get a civil letter in the mail in about 1-2weeks. And telling me to follow through with what the letter says. Should i be worried about jail time or any expensive fees that could show up on my record? Need help, thanks
They probably did not contact police. If they did, you may receive a court summons in the mail. Ignore the civil letter...they are just trying to extort money from you.
If the police weren't called you will probably not be charged, although the prosecutors do technically have one year from the day it happened to charge you with Shoplifting. As for the civil letter, it probably will come from an attorney's office in New York (that lawyer has a contract with Walmart). They will request that you pay between $200-$300, it is essentially a civil demand letter. If you are not charged with the shoplifting you don't have to pay it, they will not waste the money taking you to civil court. Contact an attorney if you actually get charged. Good luck.
Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.
