I’m on summary probation and I know not to get into trouble but yesterday I went to target to buy a Christmas basket and a couple other things to put in the basket so I went to self check out in a rush because my Uber was coming so I scanned everything quickly when they asked to see my receipt I showed them they said I was missing an item the basket so I said sorry I’ll pay for it right now I thought it scanned . They said no and took me into a room and charged me with petty theft even though I had never left the store and had made a simple mistake that could've been resolved but instead of letting me pay for it because I didn't realize I hadn't paid for it they charged me with petty theft of $50.18 and I’m on summary probation. What could happen ?
You were charged with theft because you went past the checkout without paying for merchandise. You say it was a mistake, but they apparently didn't believe you.
If you actually received a notice to appear in court, you could be found in violation of probation in addition to any jail time for the new arrest. If you can't afford to hire your own lawyer, the judge will appoint one from the Public Defender's Office.
