I was checking my credit score and saw that Equifax shows that i filed bankruptcy back in 2012, says its discharged ch-7, responsibility is joint? I've never filed before so what does this mean? Is it affecting my score? I'm very confused.
It sounds like you were the cosignor on a debt with someone that did go bankrupt in 2012. The creditor has reported that the debt was discharged as to the person that filed Chapter 7, but there was a joint party on the debt, i.e. (you?). You can request information from the credit bureau regarding this entry by filling out the dispute form from the credit report and if you know the person that filed bankruptcy you could check with the bankruptcy court clerk to review the bankruptcy petition and verify that the debt in question was included in the Chapter 7. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
First, there are 2 places a bankruptcy appears on a person's credit report. The first is in the public records section. The way you describe the entry, it doesn't sound like the BK is being reported as a public record. The second place where a bankruptcy is noted is by the individual creditor (trade line) report. As David says, it appears from your description that you might have been a co-signor on a loan and the primary borrower filed bankruptcy. If that is the case, you may still dispute the entry since you weren't the one who filed the bankruptcy, but there is also the question of the status of the debt as to you.
However, if the BK is appearing as a public record and you never filed BK, then that is clearly erroneous and you should dispute that entry with Equifax.
You should dispute this asap. I agree that you may have been a consigner on a debt that was discharged. It also might just be a mistake. A bankruptcy on your credit report will absolutely have a negative effect on your credit score. Good Luck.
