I am currently receiving WI State benefits (Childcare/Medical Insurance). I received a Summons regarding Paternity Acknowledgement and I must respond via mail within 45 days from 7/21 of when I received it. The father of my 2 kids and I signed an "acknowledgment of paternity" and filed it with the State at the time of birth for both kids. However, we are not living together and the kids are residing with me. The father is still actively supporting my 2 kids but no written agreement has been established. The circuit court is trying to request the following relief:
- an order for child support
- an order for health care expenses/ insurance
- contribution toward reasonable birth expenses
- an order addressing tax exemption
- an order addressing legal custody and physical placement
- the costs of the petition action
- any other relief authorized under WI statutes
It sounds from your description that the state has filed the family law action to have what is referred to as a “terms hearing” to set orders on custody. placement, child support, health insurance and other issues that affect your child. The Milwaukee justice center at the Milwaukee county courthouse offers a free limited legal advice clinic daily. Take your papers over there and they can help you complete an answer or response to the petition.
