I got a ticket for an expired tag and, in addition, possession of marijuana. I was told by the officer I would only have to pay a determined fine for possession and a fixed fine for tags and I won't have to go court. what does this mean? (I got 1 citation (tag) and 1 notice to appear (possession) [stating I could appear but it isn't mandatory, could just pay fine]).
1) Don't take legal advise from a cop.
2) You have been charged with crimes, you face serious consequences that can effect the rest of your life and hiring a criminal defense lawyer is your best move.
3) You are free to do what you want but I urge you not to represent yourself. There is a solid reason for Abe Lincoln's age old quote that "he who represents himself has a fool for a client". Please do not be that fool. (My advise is firm: Hire a lawyer.)
4) GET OFFLINE (caps intentional) and into a skilled and experienced 407 area criminal defense lawyer's office. Use the "Find a Lawyer" feature on AVVO to locate proximate lawyers, make an appointment, show up on time, bring whatever evidence, documents or witnesses that you may have, engage in a meaningful face-to-face consultation and get yourself some advise which is legally sound and has been custom tailored as possible to meet your specific reasonable needs in your unique case.
Wishing you luck and hoping that I have been helpful in answering your question.
