i recently got caught for shoplifting underage at a grocery store. i stole around 40 dollars worth of birth control and they fined me and called the cops since its policy for anything over 20 dollars. the police gave me court also, i don't know when. I'm 15 and i have a permit, its my first time ever getting in trouble with the law and i want to know what kind of punishment i should expect? the police told me probably community service and some bad kid classes? I'm not sure tho. i have a decent 2.5 gpa and a year around athlete and I'm not a trouble maker.. i made a dumb decision..
While I don't always trust what a police officer tells someone charged with a crime, if what you have posted is true, you have no prior trouble with the law, you will get some form of informal probation so that you can go on with your teen years. You may be required to attend some type of theft class, some community service, and stay out of trouble for a while. If there is more to it, then it may be different. You may want to talk to a juvenile defense or education attorney to figure out what type of impact, if any, this situation could adversally affect your athletic endeavors.
You are being charged with a criminal offense. I suggest you let your parents and/or legal guardian know and get a lawyer to assist you ASAP. It is never smart trying to navigate the criminal/juvenile justice system alone. An attorney may be able to negotiate a favorable disposition for you that won't hurt you for a long time to come.
