I thought I had worked out a payment plan with the attorney for my hospital bills totaling $3700 for 2 births. One in 2016 and another in 2014, which I had been slowly paying, I guess a little too slowly. In maybe May I got a letter saying this attorney would be collecting the debt now. I called and I was told to pay what I could, which I had been doing. In July, I got a paper in the mail saying I wasn't upholding the agreement and would be sued if I didn't respond in 30 days. I called the next day and left a voicemail, no one ever responded. Today, I got served a citation for the $3700 plus 25% attorney's fees.
I called the attorney and they said the original agreement was for $100 a month, but that's not what I remember. I remember the woman telling me to "pay whatever I could." But the attorney said, unless I could pay $1000 right then, that I should just go forward and wait for the judgment. I don't want there to be a judgement, but I don't have any money. And she said the judgment will total around $4800, which I definitely don't have. I don't know what to do. I can't afford a lawyer.
