I am filling out N400 application and I am stumped at Part 12, 44 A question. I came to US when I was 25 yrs old on student visa. I did not know at that time that I had to register for selective service. I have been a Permanent Resident for more than 7 years and I am applying for citizenship at 42. What to do about the selective service question? Please help.
When you were here on a student visa you were not supposed to register for the selective service, so you are fine in that regard. Selective service is only for us citizens, lawful permanent residents, and other Residents of the US—but not people with non-immigrant visas (like F, J, M, H and some others). If you were here but on a student visa (or other non-immigrant visa) until age 26, then you would be considered a lawful non-immigrant. If that is the case, the correct selection for that question is “No.”
