I am a 16 year old living in New York. I want to start an online drop-shipping business. In order to do this, the company "Shopify" will eventually ask for proof of identity. My store would get shut down since I am not at least 18 years or older. There are ways around this system. For instance, I can use my parents SSN and other details to set up the store, and when asked for proof I can simply show their information. However, this is not possible in my case because my parents do not have a SSN. I have heard that I can set up a LLC and get a EIN to present to "Shopify" when asked for details. Ive looked up information regarding setting up an LLC and I see that it can cost around 400-600 US dollars. People who have used this method say they have said they used the LLC and put their name and their parents name on it, which I also plan on doing myself. Since I am not educated on the law and do not know much about an LLC, is there anything I should look out for while setting this up for my business? Should I fill this out with a professional?
Yes, you can start an LLC, but you should have one of your parents be a member.
There will be other questions you find as you seek to open an e-commerce web site or App. In my experience, working with a lawyer as you begin will save you a lot of money in the future.
I have written a legal guide on this site with issues you will need to discuss with an Internet attorney. I have placed a link here for your convenience: http://www.avvo.com/legal-guides/ugc/legal-steps-to-opening-a-new-e-commerce-website-app-or-blog
You may want to discuss your situation with a lawyer in more detail. Many lawyers on Avvo offer a free phone consultation
