I went to a local dentist office to have my teeth looked at. This was my first time as a patient there and I was given first time patient paper work. I had difficulties completing the paper work without assistance. When I was taken back I expressed that I would need someone to help me finish it. While relieving x-rays I overheard the employees arguing over who would have to help me saying "I am not paid to help some blind guy" and " I should not have to do that". It was humiliating and I felt as though I were an inconvenience to them. They did not help me.
The term "hostile environment" is often misunderstood. Under federal law, a hostile environment is considered a form of discrimination, which means that it is only illegal if the reason for the hostile environment is discriminatory based on race, sex, age, disability, national origin, or religion. It also might constitute retaliation, if the reason you are being subjected to it is because you have taken some sort of protected action, such as filing a charge of discrimination with the EEOC, testifying in support of another employee, or it you have used (or tried to use) FMLA leave. In addition, to be "actionable" (something you can sue for), the harassment must be "so severe or pervasive that it constitutes a change in the terms and conditions of your relationship." That means it has to be more than simply making an occasional rude comment or joke.
