A murder took place at a residence and I want to know what are the penalties in the state of N.C. for these crimes
First degree murder carries a life sentence and there is potential for the death penalty in some cases.
Like my colleague said, First Degree Murder can carry a life sentence with the possibility of the death penalty. First Degree Burglary carries between 38 and 80 months, or far more depending on the defendants prior record level.

Death or life in prison are potential sentences. But the sentence depends upon more facts and factors than you have written.

1st degree murder is a Class A felony and carries a mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole and a possible death sentence (there is a de facto moratorium on the death penalty in NC at the moment)
1st degree burglary is a class C felony and generally carries 38-204 months in prison depending on mitigating factors, aggravating factors, and prior record level of the offender. Probation is only available if the judge finds extraordinarily mitigation.
