What is the percentage of rent does a "roommate" pay?

The question you seem to be asking is whether $500 per month is a fair price to pay to your roommate for your share of rent and living expenses. We really can't say. You might start to figure this out though, by finding out how much the mortgage or rent is for your roommate, and how much utilities are such as gas, electric, garbage removal, and so on. Are you using 1/2 of the home and 1/2 of the services? If so, then maybe a fair number to start with is 1/2 of the household's ongoing expenses. If that's more than your ability to pay, then maybe you and your roommate might want to agree to something less that is fair, considering your limited income.
If you need more help with this, maybe you could ask a friend or family member to help you think it through. This really isn't a legal question at all - it's more a personal budgets and relationships question. Best of luck to you.
