I was caught shoplifting at Wal-Mart tonight and received a citation. I have a court date set for March 11th. What can I expect to happen on that day? What is the best way to handle this? Should I get a lawyer or public defender or go on my own? I have never been in any trouble with the law and want to be sure I know my options and make the best decision.
Do not go it on your own unless you are an attorney. Shoplifting is a minimum Class A misdemeanor which can get you up to 12 months in jail and a conviction will make you a convicted criminal with a criminal record for the rest of your life. Contact and hire a criminal defense attorney immediately who can work for you on trying to get the best outcome in your case.

I agree with my colleague. With an attorney's help you may be able to have this charge diverted and expunged.

My colleagues are correct. Hire a good defense lawyer. Make certain that you discuss Diversion with that lawyer.
