the child custody case im in has not yet been completed and currently i have supervised visits. a temporary order has been set to joint legal custody with tie breaker authority to other parent. we have pre trial soon and want to know whatd to expect. is it a big deal? how much longer until we get a final custody order after the pre trial?
A pre trial conference is the court’s last ditch effort to try to settle the case. If it’s not settled at the pre trial conference (a non evidentiary hearing) then a merits hearing will be next (merits hearing is a evidentiary hearing where a judge will hear testimony and receive evidence and then make a ruling on what the custody arrangement will be). That hearing timing depends on the county you are in. It could occur a few weeks after the pre trial conference or a few months after.
