I agree with Ms. Smejkal. The judge will ask whether you have an attorney. If you don't, the judge will grant you a continuance to hire one. If you do, your attorney can obtain copies of all the discovery (such as police reports) and make decisions such as whether to set the case for trial or talk to the prosecutor about a possible resolution of your case.
