What are steps I can do for exemptions on a garnishment from 2008? It was a car loan I defaulted on? I had a car repo'd ad the bank sold it and now after all these year coming or me for the diff plus interest and fees. I only get ssi income and girlfriend supports me. I also have a support pay,et i have to pay for child support. since i only have ssi income and owe support is there n exemption? someone told me i could right off 2500? not sure how this works. i had a bank acct and it was frozen with 700 in it and i owe 4000 + 3000 in bs fees. this is a suntrust acct and idk why they didnt charge off.( i typed this for my bf)
Social Security is usually exempt from garnishment. If you have an account that only has social security in it, the bank should not have frozen the account. However, if you have put other money in there (even just a penny) from money that is not Social Security, it can lose its protections. Going forward, you want to make sure you have a social security account. The money is direct deposited into the bank account from the U.S Treasury and then you can withdraw from that account, but cannot deposit any other money; you cannot even withdraw some funds and then deposit them back in later the same day.
If the garnishment was of clearly social security, you need to make sure to talk to an attorney today. If the money was frozen but not taken, then you want to make sure you are protected as much as possible going forward. Good luck!

If they garnished your bank account and the only money that goes in there is your Social Security, the BANK should NOT send the money in on the garnishment. You do NOT want to have a joint account with the GF.
Don't know why your bank froze the account. I'm wondering if I'm missing part of this story.
I'm NOT your lawyer. Giving you some ideas to discuss. I'm in Stafford, Sterling and Annandale.
