My son who is 19 got this ticket while at Topsail Beach, NC. He was holding an unopened beer and a p[olice officer saw him. We wanted to know if he should just pay the fine or if we need to hire an attorney. Also, will this go on his record?
You should call a local attorney in NC because the laws in Virginia are different. If that where a charge in Virginia, it could be possession of alcohol, which is a Class I misdemeanor (same as a dui or possession of marijuana). Clearly, you would want to avoid such a conviction if possible. But I don't know what that charge means or what the law is in NC.
I'm sure it would be easy to just call a firm near where he was charged and ask them for a free consultation.
Best of luck,
This answer does not create a attorney/client relationship, but is intended solely in the court of discussion. It is always my recommendation to retain an attorney whenever a court appearance is necessary. This recommendation is highlighted when it relates to an individual's criminal record.

You should hire a criminal defense attorney to assist you. A payment is a plea of guilty and a conviction. Get counsel.
I am trying to give you a general answer to your question. We do not have an attorney-client relationship by this response on the avvo website. I have not been retained to represent you. I am licensed to practice law in Kentucky and in federal court in this state and the Southern District of Indiana. You need to seek legal advice from an attorney licensed to practice in your area..
