I got a open container ticket in LA. I extended the court date once and then paid in full a couple days ago online. I checked the status of my ticket today and it says case closed. Bail forfiture. But at the bottom it still lists the next court date when I was supposed to appear. It says last action/appearance date: then the date. Do I need to still show up to court?
If it says you need to appear then you need to go. Bail is forfeited when you are supposed to go to court and don't show up. Apparently you have already missed a court appearance. Consult with a traffic attorney near you.
In infraction cases, "Bail Forfeiture" means you paid the fine.
You should call the clerk of the court and ask whether you need to appear in court.
It sounds to me like the clerk may have neglected to take the next court date off the calendar when you paid the fine... but I've never seen the documents, so I'm guessing based on my experience.
This is a general discussion of legal principles by a California lawyer and does not create an attorney/client relationship.
I concur with Mr. Marshall. Pick up the phone and call the clerk and verify that you do not need to appear.
Hopefully you were not under the age of 21 at the time. If you were the ticket will cost you a one year driver's license suspension.
