My soon to be ex husband and i have not been living together since December of 2016. He asked me for my ssn because we are still married and supposedly needed my info for his taxes.
What am I missing here. He said he needed your SSN for his taxes. Wasn't giving him your SSN implicit permission to use it on his taxes?
Your husband is required to file as "married" - either married filing jointly (which I presume you do not want, although maybe for the wrong reasons) or married filing separately. For either of the two types of filings, he would need your social security number. He can also get your social security number from your past tax returns.
Tax Forms for individuals who are married filing separate ask the question. Married filing separate from who? You might be able to request a copy of the return or tax return transcript if it the filing was joint. Call IRS and discuss your concerns.
