I am 15 years old and turn 16 tomorrow. My boyfriend is 17 years and 8 months. We had consensual sex last weekend and my parents found our texts talking about it. They are furious and are threatening legal action. What can they legally do? I agreed to it and he is only 1 and a half years older than me. My parents say he is demeaning me and saying mean things which he is but I still agreed to have sex with him and don't wnat him to get in trouble. Please help! My Dad is really upset and will probably talk to a lawyer. He can't file charges himself, correct?
The age of consent in Virginia is 18, with a close-in-age exception that allows teenagers aged 15 to 17 to engage in sexual acts but only with a partner younger than 18. He can make a police report, but it would not amount to statutory rape. They might be able to make something stick though.
