I have previous employer's releasing medical information about me to current employer that dose not put anyone at risk but they have made me sound like a drug user. I was working driving a truck got pulled for a random urin test test came back failed but I had a medical prescription for the medicine so I continue to work for that company. Until had a disagreement and I left. Now my current employer is friends with a office worker from previous employer and she told current employer that I failed the test and that I was terminated for that reason never stated the facts nor did I ever sign a release for them to discuss this
You can sue them for defamation and there are certainly some hipaa laws they may actually be violating without knowing it. Protection of employee records has state and federal implications. I would hire an attorney and get them working on it.

What are your damages? How have you been injured by the release of information? This is not worth wasting your time with. You say that someone at the former employer told your boss that you failed a drug test. First off, truth is an absolute defense and you acknowledge that you did have such a result. Admittedly you assert that you had a physician's Rx for what was in your system but that doesn't change the fact that you tested positive. Secondly, you assert that this person misrepresented that you were termed for the drug test but you were not. That could be a basis for a defamation suit but have you lost your new job because of this? How are you damaged? Missouri eliminated per se defamation close to 30 years ago so now you can't just assert it affected your reputation but rather that you can point to actual dollars and cents that you lost in damages. Absent damages you have nothing.
