I was found in contempt on 2 cases. Previously had disability claim and no income. Recently started back to work. Judge ordered me to pay $1000 in 45 days on one case and $1500 in 60 on the other plus make regular payments or spend 6 months in jail. I dont make that much money in that amount of time. What can i do?
If the judge has already found you in contempt and ordered you to pay those amounts, you have 3 options: 1) If 10 days have not yet passed since the order was filed, you could ask the court to reconsider its order with a motion for reconsideration; 2) If it has not been 30 days since the order was filed, you could file an appeal with the South Carolina Court of Appeals if you believe the court made some error in finding you were capable of paying those sums in light of your financial situation; or 3) Do everything you legally can to come up with the money you have been ordered to pay in the time allotted in order that you may avoid being picked up on a bench warrant and placed in jail.
