I’m renting a room in a converted house the landlord lives in a separate apartment in the basement and every time I leave the house he comes in through the back door enters my locked room and steals my clothes which he is currently hiding in his garage he also keeps destroying my air conditioners and the police are not helping
Dear Bronx Tenant:
You could move away from the thief you say is your landlord and as you know "and the police are not helping..."
A tenant of a room without a lease is not bound by any law in NYC to continue a month to month tenancy--especially in such horrible conditions.
Breaking into your room and stealing your clothes is a form of eviction that ends the tenancy so you are free to leave.
You could sue the landlord in Civil Court for the return of your stolen property. The lawsuit is known as Replevin
See: replevin: an action brought for the owner of items to recover possession of those items when those items were wrongfully taken or are being wrongfully kept
