I been paying child support since 1995 and I carried insurance on 2 of them and they mother was getting assistance from Dhs and I did not know at the time we were living together but I left after I had paid in on child support and I always did for my kids and still didn't get to see them unless the mother wanted me to she did everything in the world to hurt me now I have this big back pay on cold support and my kids are grown. Now I want to know how can I get this back child support off me I am disabled and on a fix income what should I do
If you have limited income, probably your best bet is to try to work with DHS/Child Support to lower your monthly payment. The first thing you should do is ask to have the amount of arrears and interest determined and make sure all your payments have been credited. You should also ask for credit for time periods you lived together. Once you agree on what the back support amount is, you can present evidence of your income and expenses and ask them to work with you on a payment plan that you can afford without significant hardship. An attorney can definitely help you, but DHS should be able to work with you if you can't afford one.
