You would need an attorney that is licensed in the state where the accident occurred. Use the Find a Lawyer feature on AVVO & read some client reviews.
You can get attorney licensed in both States, such as I am, Nevada and California. Use the Avvo lawyer finder tool.
Assuming the accident happened in California, it may be best to have an attorney licensed there. There are advantages to working with an attorney licensed in your home State as well. This would include having an attorney familiar with the doctors who might be treating you - and even more important if you need help finding doctors familiar with the types of injuries suffered in car accidents and how best to help their patients recover for those injuries.
Hope this helps.

This answer does not create an attorney client relationship and does not constitute legal advice, but is solely the opinion of a Nevada Attorney.
A personal injury attorney near the place where the collision occurred, and, therefore, probably near the court where an action may be filed if necessary, may be your more economical bet.
You should obtain needed medical care and treatment immediately and follow the doctor's advice. Do not give any statements to the adverse party or insurance company nor grant them access to any medical records. Photograph the injuries and the damage done to any property. Contact a personal injury attorney in your area as soon as possible so that you can protect your rights. You may also find it helpful to review the Legal Guides I have published on Avvo.com dealing with many of the issues you are now facing. You want an attorney that is licensed and actively practices in the state where the incident occurred. Some attorneys will attempt to handle these matters in other states that they are not licensed in with the hope of an easy settlement, but this is not in your best interest.
You need an auto accident injury attorney that is licensed to practice in the state the accident occurred. Best of luck.
Typically, you need an attorney who is licensed to practice Law in the State where the Accident occurred. If the collision occurred in California, before Nevada state lines, then CA counsel would be best. As an alternative, if you wanted to retain an attorney in Las Vegas, NV, for your case, you could. However, if negotiations fail, and the case must be litigated, you would have associate with an attorney in the State where the accident happened.
If this collision occurred in NV, a number of advantages exist by retaining a NV lawyer. First, you must have an attorney licensed in NV to practice in NV. Also any personal injury attorney with experience can direct you to medical providers who will treat you whether or not you have medical insurance. Also, many people do not understand that you always want an attorney to act as a go between when speaking about your case once you have been injured because any harmful statements that you make to others can be used against you as you are a potential party to a lawsuit and are exceptions to the hearsay rule.
If it happened in CA the same situation applies (the rules vary from state to state). Bottom line, hire an attorney licensed to practice in the state where the accident/injuries occurred for quicker and more effective results. Good luck!!
