I changed my last name on my social security at the end of dec 2016 and I still have not been able to change all my personal documents. My W2 from work reflects my old last name and my social security reflects the new one. I usually do my own taxes but this time I am not sure if I should file using my new last name or old last name. I assume I have to follow what my social swcurity card says but it doesnt match my W2. Please advise.
You should use the name from your social security card. If you are filing your return electronically, you will have to enter information from your W-2. If you are able to do so, I suggest entering the information on the W-2 entry area to match exactly what is on your W-2. Some systems allow this and some don't but it can aid in speeding the processing of your return if you are able to do this. However, the name you list on your tax return itself (not the W-2 entry area) must match the name on your Social Security card, otherwise the IRS will send you a letter that the information on the return does not match your Social Security information.

Your return needs to match the name that appears in the records for social security.

Yes, use the name that is currently on your SS card. You may wish to enclose a note with your return advising of the name and social security number change.
