I had a tenant that was evicted from my rental property in Connecticut. She has a small business, and currently lives in Massachusetts. I am trying to sue her for back utilities and property damage. Do I bring the suit in Connecticut, or Mass?
You can sue the ex-tenant in Connecticut. If she lives in MA and her business is in MA, you may have a difficult time collecting on the judgment against her in MA. You may need to domesticate the CT judgment in MA. So, if she lives and works in MA, maybe try going to MA to begin with if it's not inconvenient for you. If you do sue the tenant in CT, try to get the tenant to at least file an "Appearance" otherwise the judgment against the tenant will be a default judgment which can be difficult to enforce in other states if you need to go outside of CT to enforce the judgment (to get a wage garnishment for example).
