I received a very confusing voice mail on my unlisted home phone saying I needed to call some law firm back asap cause they were transferring my case for finial review. I was not sure what this was. I called the 443 number back( it was a MD number) they automatically said hello *(*(*& even though I thought I blocked my number. Well they claimed I owe money for a 2010 payday loan I took out in MD. I was not in MD at all in 2010. when I was in the military I was stationed there. Well that's the address and info they gave me and told me if I didn't pay 800 I was begin taken to court in Hartford county MD for fraud and deception. well I was a id theft victim and I told them that I could not go to MD they kept telling me its easer to just pay and be done with it. so I paid!! was this a scam?
Threats of the nature you describe are indicative of scammers who have no legal right to collect any loan you may have. Report them to law enforcement (state Attorney General, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau). You should NOT pay or provide information. The threats violate the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, although a civil suit against this sort of scammer is usually worthless.
