Upon hire, my employer told me I would be working 5 shifts a week. About two or three months ago she started cutting me down to 4 shifts a week. (She hired new people for the holiday season and needed to spread the hours around, so I understood that.) Now, for the last 3 weeks she has me down to working 3 shifts a week, and I can no longer support myself. She has not given me any explanation as to why. I am looking for other/additional work, but in the mean time I thought about filing for partial unemployment. Should I speak with a lawyer or just file a claim with EDD?
It never hurts to consult a lawyer about your situation, but I don't see anything in your post that would indicate you might have a legal claim against your employer based on the reduction in the number of hours. The general rule in California is at-will employment, which includes the right to reduce your hours for any reason or no reason at all, provided there is no illegal motivation such as discrimination or retaliation. Unless you have a contract, the general rule is at-will employment. Good luck and I hope you are able to find the level of employment you need to support yourself.

There is nothing in your post that would suggest unlawful conduct by your employer. While you can consult with an attorney, unless there is more it would seem your only recourse is to find another job and file for unemployment benefits for the shortfall if you qualify.
