I got the ticket for not changing lanes for emergency vehicle (police car on the shoulder). I slowed down and swerved but did not change lanes because I was not sure if the left lane was clear. To minimize the fines and points should I plea guilty or not guilty? I have clean records and I was shocked when I got a ticket. I would expect a warning but not a ticket.
You should definitely fight that ticket. It is a serious and substantial ticket. Was it in Trenton or another town?

Retain an attorney and have the attorney enter a not guilty plea. This is a serious charge, recently revised by the state. Do not go to court alone on this offense.

Time to get over your shock and retain an attorney to help you fight the ticket or at least negotiate a lesser offense and penalty. Speeding/Traffic Ticket attorneys are here on AVVO and rates are usually quite reasonable. Hire an attorney.

Pleading guilty has little benefit short of less/no court costs. Sounds like something that can be fought. No one automatically gets a warning, and it is getting more and more rare as police forces are becoming more revenue-oriented.

Find a local attorney who practices in Municipal Court. As my colleagues have already pointed out, this is serious enough to justify the cost of an attorney. Obtain your driver's abstract from Motor Vehicles, as whatever attorney you retain will need that information.

Unfortunately the police seem to be using this relatively new law to make money. In north Jersey it is a real scam. You can try to fight, get the radio transmissions to see if there was an emergency etc. But check this, i believe it is 0 points. Is it worth the fight. they may switch it a obstruction of traffic which may be a lower fine.
