I received the citation after the police were called twice to the apartment, the first time the officer said he couldn’t hear anything but 20 min later he came back (after we had turned the music down) and gave me the citation. This is my first ever offense or appearance in court and I’m unsure how it all works. Also, will this appear on my record and be detrimental to future background checks?
I do not believe you should be too concerned about the citation. It may very well be that the Assistant District Attorney prosecuting your case will agree to forego prosecution if there are no more complaints or citations within the next six months to one year. I cannot be certain, however. Jackson City Court is different from Madison County General Sessions Court in that the judges and prosecutors are different.
Either way, I am of the opinion that the charge will likely eventually be dismissed. You can get all paperwork regarding the charge/citation destroyed at that point by seeking and being granted an expungement.
As always, regardless of how trivial a charge may seem, I encourage you to retain an attorney to represent you in this matter.
