I have worked one year as housekeeper self employed for a family. Wife gave me a raise and was complimentary for all our hard work. Next day she fires lead housekeeper and then me. She gave no reasons and no cause. Three days later she asked me to work again. I didnt respond. Now she is asking for money she prepaid. (As she had no intention to fire me) no severance pay was offered. This work was 2/3 of my business. She is threatening small claims now. Overpay is about $300-400? Can she break a verbal contract wirhout cause and without warning and offer no compendation of any sort?
If you are self employed, you are an independent contractor. She has no employment relationship with you and is not subject to discrimination laws. If she "prepaid" or "overpaid," it sounds like you didn't earn the money, so it is more than likely hers.
