I am currently a Masters student and hold F1 visa. I am also using my CPT to work full time. I have also filed for I-130 and in a few months I will have a pending I-485.
I am recently admitted to a PhD program ( different school) starting September 2019. My question from you is that can I register for my PhD using pending I-485 (with I-797 notice)? Based on the discussions that I have with the school, it is possible BUT since I ALSO have an I20 from the other school( for the Masters program) I would need to know what my status would be and if it is possible to have two status(??))?
To summarize: 1: Currently have an I20 from one school with F1 status and CPT 2: Going to register at another school with Pending I485
F-1 is a status. A pending adjustee is not a status. It is better to maintain status. But, not required of a pending adjustee.

It is best to maintain your status as F1 as a back-up until you get your permanent residence. Good luck.
