My husband owns a house jointly with his brother. The brother is chronically ill and had a couple come to live with him, rent free, in exchange for personal care. He now must go into assisted living and the brothers will sell the house. There was no written lease, agreement, etc. Any rules for their notice to vacate?
Okay the 1st thing I did was to change this to a landlord-tenant question because most likely if there is a dispute about the couple leaving the house it will be considered to be a landlord-tenant matter. The Vermont landlord-tenant statute is very specific about how and when notices to vacate need to be delivered to potential tenants. It is also dependent upon how long these folks have been there with you brother. The best thing you can do is contact a lawyer who does work in this area as there is a very active legal aid situation in favor of tenants.
