My wife and I sponsored (Green Card) her mother a couple of years ago. She went back home. Can we get out of the sponsorship?

My wife and I sponsored a Green Card for her mother four years ago. She went back home to the Philippines two years after her arrival. We tried to get the card back from her so we could relinquish it to the Federal Government, but she refused to let us do so. I told my wife all along that her mother was probably planning on returning, but this time she would reside in CA with her dearest friend. Unfortunately I was correct. After remaining out of the country for more than a year and a half she returned. She is in CA being paid (probably under the table) to sit with an American, and sending her money back to her family in the Philippines. Is there any way we can get out of this sponsorship? She seems to have us over a barrel, and has no concern what this is doing to her daughter (my wife), her grandkids (our two children), and certainly not me. Thanks!
I'm moving your question to the Immigration category; someone there will be better able to assist you.
